5 Ways to Celebrate Spring

My personal practice of yoga and style of teaching is highly influenced by the seasons. When we align and flow with what is - for example doing more restful poses and working on comfort and ease in stillness during winter - we are aligning with our natural biological rythyms.

When spring rolls around I can feel the urge to purge that stagnant energy from winter and incorporate more flow and activating poses and breathework.

Spring is that in between time, a delicate bridge between Yin (moon) energy of Winter, and Yang (sun) energy of summer. It is a great time to practice the elusive concept of BALANCE.  Balance is the flow between stillness and movement, rest and activity, and the wisdom to know when and how much to do of each.

Check out below how I ease into Spring after funky winter!

1.) Rest
It can be tempting to jump up and go when the the birds start chirping and the sun shows it's face, especially for Minnesotans. Ease into the buzzing energy by taking short rests during the day, going to bed when the sun goes down, and begin and end your yoga practice with a restorative pose.

2.) Fresh Air

It's pretty incredible what a bit of fresh air and sunshine can do for your physiology and mood. The science is there, and we all KNOW this to be so effective. Commit to one intentional ritual a day outside. Eat lunch outside, sit on your porch, go for a 5-10 min walk. Simple and effective ways to reset your nervous system. Co-regulation with nature is so powerful!

3.) Movement

Walk, run, yoga, light weights, do housework, jump on a trampoline, dance…any way that you can move you body in your daily routines is helping fluid pump through your lymph system. Think of movement as the pump to a well. Get that water pressure  flowing! Your Qi, Prana, Life Force Energy will thank you!

4.) Dry Brushing

This is a supportive practice that is a gentle yet effective way to promote lymph flow. As an Occupational Therapist, I also know the benefits of brushing techniques for regulating the nervous system through deep pressure and tactile recepters in our skin. Check out a tutorial video here.

5.) Flower Power

Our environment impacts our nervous system through sensory messages and input. Do you still have snowflakes hanging in your windows? The simple act of changing out my house decor for the new season is a ritual that bring me great joy! Add some fresh  or faux flowers to send your body and brain a message of JOY!
